JIM APFELBAUM
Jim Apfelbaum received the 2002 Media/Public Relations Award from the Southern Texas Section of the PGA of America, given for "significant contributions in the areas of promotion and public awareness that has helped to elevate the status of the PGA golf professionals and the Southern Texas Section." Jim also won the award in 2000, one of three people to have done so more than once. He's also been nominated for the 2003 award.
A member of the Golf Writers' Association of America since 1989, he's reported from professional golf's most prestigious events including the Ryder Cup, U.S. Open, British Open and the Masters.
Senior writer for America Online's groundbreaking iGOLF, Jim contributed five times a week on a variety of topics for three years. Golf World has singled out his travel writing as "The stuff no one else has." The book Golf on the Web cited his humor and commentary as "The best of the bunch." Jim is the current president of the Texas Golf Writers Association.
His books include Golf on $30 a Day (or Less) from Villard Books and, with collaborator Barbara Puett, A Woman's Own Golf Book, and Golf Etiquette, both on St. Martin's Press. A second edition of Golf Etiquette, recommended by Paul Harvey as "The first and last word on how properly to behave on and off the golf course," and endorsed by Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw and Harvey Penick is scheduled for publication later this year.
Jim hosts The Golf Show each week for radio sports market leader KVET-AM in Austin. He's interviewed many of golf's most prominent figures. Recent guests include: Dave Pelz, Betsy Rawls, psychologist Dr. Joseph Parent, USGA president Sandy Tatum and numerous fellow authors and journalists. A past editor and columnist for Austin Monthly magazine, Jim has served as a board member of the Austin Writers' League and Golf Collectors' Society. He's a two-time winner of the AWL's (now The Writers' League of Texas)"The Word is Art" award and has taught classes in book proposals and promotion. His byline has appeared in Golf, Golfweek, Golf Illustrated, Links, Golf Traveler and The Wall Street Journal. One-time weekly contributor to "The Golfer's Network," he is a course rating panelist for Golf and Golfweek and recently covered Annika Sorenstam's appearance at Colonial for Canadian sports network, Sportsnet.
Outside of golf, Jim has served as press secretary for a U.S. Senate candidate, as a proofreader and editorial consultant to Dell Computer and March/First Advertising, as a managing desk editor for a national financial wire service and as a general assignment reporter for a daily newspaper. He's had the pleasure of visiting golf locations as diverse as Lahinch, Lubbock and Edmonton.
